In the summer of 2024, the Battle Goat family ventured to Germany. We flew into Munich and spent a little bit of time in the city. We went to the BMW Museum, which was super cool but packed and there was absolutely no air conditioning. Honestly, the lack of air conditioning was a bit of a struggle for us Americans in Europe. But anyway, the Marienplatz in Munich was great. There was a lot of historical buildings, tons of shopping, and basically an infinite number of great restaurants. We ate at the Lowenbrau brewery and it was awesome.

While in Munich, we did a tour on Hitler's rise to power and saw some of the big spots where he spearheaded meetings. We also saw where the Beer Hall Putsch (attempted revolt) was planned and then stood in the street where it failed and Hitler, the coward, ran away while many of his Nazi followers were killed.

Most of our stay was on the southern border of Germany in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We stayed at the Edelweiss Resort which is one of the Armed Forces Recreational Centers where only U.S. Military members are allowed to stay (at really great prices). The location of the resort was awesome. We were among the Alps and the views were beautiful. The resort offered a lot of guided tours and tickets for different attractions.

Our favorite spot was definitely the Marienplatz in town. We'd drive the couple miles over and walk around to the shops and different restaurants. We got some great beer, great food, and great ice cream. Everyone was really friendly even though not as many people spoke English compared to Munich.

One of the attractions nearby is the Zugspitze, which is Germany's tallest mountain. You can take a gigantic cable car to the top of the mountain and once on top there are restaurants and a glacier to roam around on. The views are incredible. When you descend, you can take the short walk over to Lake Eibsee which was the craziest color blue (we learned it was from the glacier runoff). The best meal of our entire trip was at the restaurant right on the lake. They had awesome beer, great spaetzle, currywurst, and potato dumplings. You can walk all the way around the lake too but we just did a mile or so on the path and then waded into the water, which was super cold.

Another mountain that you can ride in a cable car to the top of was Mount Wank (Vonk! Get your mind out of the gutter). This mountain was much shorter but had great views, a playground for the kids to climb around on, and a cool restaurant.

Through the resort, we also did an adults only brewery tour (the kids stayed at the resort for a supervised, and apparently very fun, 'Kids Night Out'). The Griesbrau brewery was outside of town but we were bussed there. The brewery tour guide was super kind and had a great sense of humor. We were given plenty of samples and took a quiz at the end to test our knowledge. We also had time to get some food there and were introduced to the pork knuckle which was by far a favorite of the German food we tried.

Another highlight of the trip was a little side quest we went on into Innsbruck, Austria. Our first stop was Ambras Castle which belonged to Archduke Ferdinand II. You could walk along the grounds, look through the armory (which was extensive), and then walk through the castle which was old and creaky but super cool. There was also a cafe there but it was tiny so we didn't eat but we did check out the gift store which had some pretty sweet stuff.

Before heading back into Germany, we walked through Maria-Theresien-Strasse which is a historic street, and probably the most popular in Innsbruck, with old castles and buildings, shops, cafes, bakeries, restaurants, and so on and on and on. We accidentally sat in the wrong section of seating for lunch. We thought we sat at an Austria restaurant but it was actually Italian, and we ended up with a pizza menu put in front of us. Not exactly what we were looking for, but still good.

So! To wrap it up...check Germany out. It's pretty cool to visit a place that has buildings older than our country. The historical stuff is really interesting and the food (and beer!) was beyond delicious. As per usual, if you have questions about restaurants, attractions, or whatever, send us a message and we'll get you the info.
Later, folks.
Be the goat.
